I have’t shared many nursing stories lately, mainly because sometimes it’s difficult to share stories and abide by HIPPA… so when I can’t, I just don’t.

Summarized amusements:

Had a patient with a broken Scapula, don’t see THAT often! very difficult bone to break.
I love Rural nursing: we had a patient who was in a biking accident. He was biking across the US, and was now stuck, in the middle of no where. There is literally no taxi’s, busses, planes, trains, or any form of public transportation, but he def could not continue his cross country trek. So, we called the local hotel, got him a room, one of our nurses drove him to his room, came back, go this bike from the hospital and took that to the hotel. And gave him enough med’s from our own stores to hold him over until the local pharmacy opened. That’s what nursing is all about.
More on the topic: Another group of people travelling across the country, in an accident, who only spoke French. Boy was that difficult, I had to drag up my rusty french from living in Pont-Aven, and realized that I know literally NO medical French, want to talk about lunch? movies? Cool, lets go, but medical speak? nadda. they were also stranded in the middle of nowhere. So we helped talk to the various people they needed to speak to, as they couldn’t speak english, then a local towns person offered to drive them to the nearest city with public transportation…. over 300 miles away.

For a long list of reasons our Ireland-Scotland adventure was cancelled… so instead we are going to CANADA!!!! Victoria, BC to be exact! Anyone ever been? I’ve bought the books and am doing research in my true OCD fashion, but would love input of anyone who has actually been there.

Due to a death in one of my roommates families’ (oddly worded sentence, I know) I brought buddy home for a few days. I was worried how oscar and buddy would get along. Oscar is my 13 lb miniature dachshund with a napoleon complex. And buddy is a pitt-boxer mix puppy who isn’t quite aware of how big he is.

And yes I slept into 1108… it’s my one day off a week. Don’t judge.

I’d say it went smashing :-)

Food shopping is all good, its more like a competition to use coupons and what not to see how good of a deal I can get. But clothes and non essentials, I CANNOT stand shopping for. It always seems like a waste when I can spend that money in so many better ways. So most of my wardrobe consists of clothes from middle school and high school, hand-me-downs from friends and family, or gifts. Occasionally I was forced to buy clothes, for special events or school (all my work scrubs are hand me downs). My work shoes are duct taped, and I don’t see a problem with that, they still work. My shoes have holes in the, and I don’t really see a problem with that. But I am down to 2 pairs of jeans that fit, one pair sprung a crotch hole yesterday, and the other pair is too big, and is missing a belt loop, so when I wear the much needed belt, odd things happen.

Today I gave in and went to Target to get a pair of jeans. I tried on 6 pairs, and hated them ALL. 1st of all I have NO torso and long ass legs so clothes just never fit right. Second of all, STORES SUCK. I hate the 360 mirrors, I hate just plain shopping in general, I hate the florecent lights, I hate changing when people are all around, waiting for my dressing room, I hate spending money, and I hate the whole clothes trying on process. It’s been so long, I don’t even know what size I am. Screw all the pressure to look a certain way and have a certain style, more than that is the pressure to CARE about those things. Sometimes I wish I was a kid again and my mom could just pick out my clothes and leave them on the chair for me to wear in the morning.

After endless shopping (like 30 minuets) and texts to the best friend I came to the decision…. to not get a pair of jeans. That’ll be another day. It’d be different if you could just try on clothes at home, but clothes never look the same out of the store. Is there a company that will bring me jeans that fit to my house and let me try them on, then not be crazy expensive?

That thing you see in this person abdomen is part of her skull.

The abdomen in question belongs to former “Mrs. Idaho” Jamie Hilton. Back in June, Hilton was involved in a devastating accident, and had to undergo emergency brain surgery. In the process, her doctors removed 25% of her skull so that her severely swollen brain would have room to return to its normal size. Fully intending to reattach the skull fragment later, Hilton’s doctors stowed it away inside her stomach, where her body would keep it nourished until she was ready to have it reattached.

In the weeks ahead, Hilton recovered marvelously, all while missing a full quarter of her skull. She wore a helmet to help prevent further injury.

By mid-July, Hilton’s swelling had subsided enough for doctors to remove the fragment from her abdomen and put it back in place with the aid of some titanium screws and plates. It’s been over two months since her second surgery, and seems to be doing incredibly well, telling the New York Post that the only lasting effect seems to have been a change in her tastebuds and the loss of her sense of smell.

As for her head, it’s back to its normal shape, albeit with a pretty awesome-looking scar.

A pastor in Seoul, South Korea has created a “baby box” for people so that people who would otherwise abandon or kill their newborns can leave them somewhere safe instead. The box has a light, a towel lining, and a bell rings as soon as a baby is placed in it so the pastor, his wife, or one of his staff can come and get it right away.

Lee Jong-rak started the box in 2009, and has welcomed all babies, often disabled or the children of single mothers, that have been placed in the box since. The babies are given a loving home, food, and shelter in his orphanage. Currently, an average of 17-18 babies are placed in the box every month.

One mother who had considered poisoning her baby before she heard about the Baby Box left her baby in the box with a letter pinned to his clothing that read:

‘My baby! Mom is so sorry.
I am so sorry to make this decision.
My son! I hope you to meet great parents,
And I am very very sorry.
I don’t deserve to say a word.
sorry, sorry, and I love you my son.
Mom loves you more than anything else.
I leave you here because I don’t know who your father is.
I used to think about something bad but I guess this box is safer for you.
That’s why I decided to leave you here.
My son, Please forgive me.’

I love reading, but I have no spare time and drive A LOT, solution? Audio books! This is what I’ve listened too recently,

Interesting book, a writer decides to write about food in the modern world, in the process learns how to cook. Discusses food science, the history of food, and food cooking processes.

Read this cuz in nursing you often work with difficult people, and its either work with them or against them, I needed some tips to work with a particular co-worker. She is now dating the guy who owns my hospital, so good thing I got the book.

super cool! Goes over the science behind why we do what we do, different habits, interesting case studies, and even how corporations get us to give them our money.

I’m a sucker for suspense, guts, science, and awesome :-)

also very useful not only for nurses and healthcare people, but for everyone, who the heck knows what to say when in those intense, life/ death situations?

another dystopian novel, read it years ago in the beginning of college, reread it, still loved it.
